Palmerston North Hospital, situated in the lower half of the North Island of New Zealand, is actively recruiting Emergency Medicine Registrars. This ED is accredited for 12 months of Advanced Training by the Australasian College for Emergency Medicine. MidCentral DHB have approved a total of 9 registrar positions.
Palmerston North Hospital is an Australasian Level 4 regional trauma centre with approximately 44,000 presentations per annum. Palmerston North is located at the intersection of State Highways 1 and 3, and is the largest city in the Manawatu region. We see both blunt and penetrating trauma with an average of 50 cases of ISS 15 or greater per year, as well as high acuity paediatric and adult medical patients. We are an increasingly busy department and have maintained a 30+% admission rate. We have access to all medical and surgical subspecialties with the exception of cardiothoracic surgery and neurosurgery; patients requiring these services are transferred to Wellington.
You will find that there is very good exposure to critical procedures compared to other larger departments. You will also have access to excellent non-ED, accredited runs in ICU, paediatrics, and medicine.
Our 9 strong Consultant group have trained in Australia, New Zealand, the UK, and US. We currently have 5 FACEMs although this will be increasing again shortly. The consultant group has a strong commitment to education. We have weekly protected registrar-led teaching sessions as well as regular critical incident, clinical radiology, paediatric and orthopaedic teaching including access to Ortho Fracture Clinics. We are proud of our exceptionally high Part I exam 1st pass success rate of 100%. We also have good support for clinical research, and desire to expand this aspect of our practise.
Our fellowship preparation program is well established and there is capacity for part-time work when you are preparing for ACEM examinations. There are separate DEMT and WBA coordinator roles.
As a department we are dedicated to patient-centered care, and we are looking for doctors with a team focus, excellent communication skills, and a clear commitment to emergency medicine.
