The Opportunity

Looking for an opportunity as a House Officer in Emergency Medicine?

The Emergency Department offers 6 or 12 month SHO runs in Emergency Medicine and actively promotes strong candidates into Registrar positions.
Palmerston North Hospital is an Australasian Level 4 regional trauma centre with approximately 48,000 presentations per annum. Palmerston North is located at the intersection of State Highways 1 and 3, and is the largest city in the Manawatu region. The department sees both blunt and penetrating trauma as well as high acuity paediatric and adult medical patients. It is an increasingly busy department and has maintained a 30+% admission rate. There is access to all medical and surgical subspecialties with the exception of cardiothoracic surgery and neurosurgery; patients requiring these services are transferred to Wellington. There is a high rate of exposure to critical procedures compared to other large departments.
Teaching is a strength of the department - there is weekly protected registrar-led teaching sessions as well as regular critical incident, clinical radiology, and paediatric teaching. There are also regular clinical simulations that are registrar-led.
The department is dedicated to patient-centred care, and are looking for doctors with a team focus, excellent communication skills, and a clear commitment to emergency medicine.
