Elective Students
If you are a New Zealand medical student desiring to spend some time at Palmerston North Hospital for an elective placement during your 6th year you will find ample opportunity to do so at our hospital.
We offer elective placements in all of the core runs and most of the sub specialities including
Priority is given to the all year Palmerston students so if you are interested we encourage you to conatct us as early as possible.
If you are an overeas student interested in spendning some time in New Zealand and would like to come to Palmerston North Hospital for an elective placement we need to advise you that we have to give priority to New Zealand students and that space is thus limited. However, we are usually able to accept a handful of overseas students each year and we welcome all applications. We give preference to students who have family or personal ties to our region and/or are interested in potentially returning to us once they have completed their medical degree.
In general we only accept final year medical students and for a maximum of 2 months in any given department. However exceptions are made on a case by case basis. We do frequently accept second to final year students into the Paediatrics Department due to a long standing collaberation with Oxford University in the UK and would welcome more junior applicants to this elective from other Unviersities as well.
If you will not be in your final year during the time at which you plan to come to New Zealand and are interested in spending time in a department other than paediatrics you will usually require a faculty sponsor. This is a Palmerston North Hospital senior medical officer who agrees to take responsibility for you during your stay. This person would make arrangements for your run, complete your evaluations, and handle any problems that might arise before, during, or after your stay with us relating to your elective.
All elective applicants are required to submit an application, provide proof of University enrollment from their home university, and evidence of medical indemnity coverage. In addition, we require MRSA test results to be performed prior to arrival at the hospital.
The course fee for elective students is NZ$300 per attachment. This fee covers administrative fees and incidental charges that you will incur during your stay. Once your application has been accepted and we have succesfully placed you on our roster you will be asked to submit a deposit payment in the amount of NZ$100 within 30 days in order to hold your placement until your arrival. If you do not provide us with this payment we reserve the right to give your allocated slot to another applicant. If you do submit a deposit this amount will be credited towards your course fee upon your arrival in Palmerston North.
If you would like to learn more about our elective programmes or would like to request an application form please contact Yvonne Detmar, Medical Administration Unit.
