Volunteer Information
MidCentral volunteers provide a key supporting role within the hospital. There are several different areas in which people can volunteer at MidCentral.

Volunteers
People wanting to volunteer are first interviewed, and then required to undertake a trial period to ensure that volunteering at MidCentral is right for them. Within the hospital environment volunteers are split into teams who organise flowers, distribute magazines and run trolleys from which patients can buy essential items and food. The hours per week are flexible within 9.00am-12.00pm weekdays, and can be varied within these times depending on the volunteer’s other commitments.
In return MidCentral supports the volunteers by providing orientation, health and safety courses, identification cards and reserved parking. In addition, annual general meetings and Christmas functions are held in recognition of the excellent service volunteers provide. Please contact Human Resources for more information on volunteering.
St John Friends of the Emergency Department (FEDS)
This is a new service provided in conjunction with St John. As a friend of the emergency department (FED) volunteer you will provide comfort, information and support to patients who are undergoing or awaiting treatment in hospital emergency departments. As a non-clinical volunteer the focus of the position will be acting in a supportive capacity only to comfort patients while allowing the medical professionals to concentrate on clinical activities. No medical care will be provided by FED volunteers.
St John are recruiting volunteers who are prepared to do one four hour shift a week. The organisation wants to establish a pool of people who will collectively provide 12 hours of cover a day, seven days a week.
In return, all FEDs will receive introductory training and will be able to attend additional training in other subjects from time to time. Once recruits have the preliminary skills required, they are assigned a duty shift where they will work alongside other St John people and Hospital ED staff. FEDs will be provided with resources and assistance to enable them to do the best job possible. People interested in volunteering as a friend of the emergency department should phone St John on freephone 0800 785 646.
Meals on Wheels
Meals on Wheels is a service delivering meals to members of the community who, because of their age, illness or disability, are unable to prepare their own meals. The service is administered by Supportlinks (a division of Enable New Zealand), who assess needs and coordinate the deliveries required. Volunteers pick up the meals from the hospital, making deliveries in the community. Volunteers must have their own car, current driver’s licenses and an interest in helping people in need. For more information on volunteering for Meals on Wheels please contact Enable.
