We are seeking an experienced and motivated Cardiologist to participate in the continuing expansion of our multi-disciplinary Cardiology Service as well as the Community Cardiology initiative.

Palmerston North Hospital has a six-bed Coronary Care Unit and dedicated attached cardiac ward.

There are facilities for exercise ECG’s, ambulatory monitoring, echocardiography (including TOE), diagnostic cardiac angiography, and the insertion and follow-up of permanent pacemakers. There is a well established heart failure service as well as hospital-based cardiac rehabilitation.

Responsibilities will include participation in the Community Cardiology programme which provides specialist cardiologist, physiologist and nursing support to outlying areas of the MidCentral region.

There is also a Cardiology research programme in place.

The MidCentral Health Cardiology Service is currently undertaking extensive planning to develop the existing service including dedicated diagnostic angiography and pacemaker implantation facilities. This is supported by a commitment to increasing the existing staff base with a view to developing a regional service.

Applicants must be eligible for vocational registration in Internal Medicine with the Medical Council of New Zealand, as well as having demonstrated clinical, management and teaching skills and the ability to work effectively within the multi-disciplinary team.

Palmerston North Hospital is a 350 bed secondary hospital, which services an urban population of 80,000 and a total population catchment of 168,000. In addition, the hospital is a teaching hospital, and is associated with both Auckland and Otago medical schools.

Palmerston North is a major university city and is at the hub of key routes to the central North Island ski fields, and river adventures. Wellington the capital city, is only a two hour journey by road, as are the wine growing regions of Hawke's Bay and Wairarapa.
