The “friendliest” hospital – at the centre of fun!

UK based psychiatry registrar Becky Chubb was bowled over by the MidCentral Health welcome. “I have never been made to feel more welcome,” she says.
From the moment she stepped off the bus, Becky says, she was treated with real respect and as a real person - who has a life. “I wish I had known what a friendly welcome I would receive as I would not have worried so much.”
Becky loved her first three month placement as an SHO in STAR 2 – the rehabilitation ward for patients over 65 - “They are an all round great team to work for,” she says. “I learnt a lot from a brilliant consultant who had a lot of time for teaching.” Becky also participated in the acute on call roster for General Medicine.
“I had more autonomy then I have ever had before,” she says of her post as psychiatry registrar. “It was a good balance between having the freedom and confidence to formulate my own views and opinions regarding patients, but at the same time having the knowledge that I had other more experienced registrars and consultants to ask whenever I felt out of my depth.”
On the beach in 30 minutes or ski-ing in two hours…“I could live in a beautiful location with plenty of disposable income for the multitude of activities you could do from there.”
Becky was concerned that being out of the UK system for a year might put her at a disadvantage - but she found to the contrary.
“I found it straight forward to apply for a training position back in the UK as part of an online application. I was able to take enough leave from work to return home to attend job interviews.
“My year abroad became a topic of conversation during the interview and the experience I had gained there was met with positive enthusiasm.”
Becky says her colleagues, who applied for a range of different specialities, also found that their year out was seen very positively.
“Having secured two job offers I have subsequently returned to the UK to begin my Core Training in Psychiatry and the extra experience I gained by working in a different country has been invaluable and given me confidence.
“During my year in New Zealand I gained experience, confidence, fantastic friends, a dubious ability to surf and even a kiwi man!” |
