Stunning Landscapes
Located in the lower half of the North Island, half way between Taupo and Wellington, Palmerston North has a population of 79,000. The landscape develops from the impressive Ruahine and Tararua ranges, striking Manawatu gorge, picturesque Pohangina Valley through the Manawatu river to the coastal plains and long expansive beaches of Himitangi, Foxton and Tangimoana. Scattered throughout the region are a number of townships, these offer a number of activities and add to the rich character of the region.
Climate
Manawatu enjoys a temperate climate with moderate seasonal variations. The average daily February temperature of 22 degrees drops to 12 degrees in July. On average there are 200 rain free days with July having the highest average rainfall.
International Airport
Palmerston North international airport remains open 99.5% of the year - more than any other in New Zealand.
Access to the region is easy through car, bus, rail or airport (international).
Central Location
Only 2 hours scenic drive from Wellington or 3 from Taupo makes Palmerston North a great base to explore the North Island from. Our international airport has regular flights throughout New Zealand as well as ports in Australia and Fiji.
The area is economically supported by an agricultural base, that houses the largest stock sale yards in the Southern Hemisphere and home to a dynamic student population with 70 major educational and research institutions. This identity also forms the basis of Manawatu’s brand “Young Heart – Easy Living”.

- Indulge your mind at Te Manawa Museum, Art Gallery and Science Centre.
- Escape to the bush, walking / biking one of the many tracks are within 10 minutes drive of the city
- Enjoy the Victoria Esplanade gardens or one of the many private / public award winning gardens.
- Sign up to the Feilding sale yards tour, then wander through the Farmers market and pick up some samples of the regions best produce.
- Go driving and explore one of the many townships scattered around Palmerston North.
- Sports lovers! Check out the New Zealand Rugby Museum, play a round at one of the regions many golf courses, go rock climbing, or watch the world class car, truck and motorbike racing and stock cars in action.
- Shop, shop, shop! Manawatu is full of specialist shops, galleries and boutiques often featuring local artists and designers.
