‘New Zealand nursing graduates enthusiastically commencing their careers in New Zealand: well-supported, safe, skilled and confident in their clinical practice; equipped for further learning and professional development; meeting the needs of health and disability support service users and employers; and building a sustainable base for the New Zealand registered nursing workforce into the future’.

PROGRAMME CONTENT

The Clinical Practice Development Programme (CPDP) is the framework used to assist the first year registered nurse to attain Level 2 (Competent) Registered Nurse Professional Development and Recognition (PDRP) programme competencies.

The First Year of Nursing Practice programme commences with a two week orientation  programme and four weeks supernumary period, which includes study days and familiarisation to the clinical practice setting. 

The aim of the learning framework is to support the transition of the new graduate nurses from the new graduate advanced beginner regsitered nurse to the competent registered nurse.  At the end of the programme the new graduate registered nurse will evidence the indicators in the four domains of the Nursing Professional Development Recognition Programme (PDRP).  Evidence of development would be through completion of the PDRP portfolio.

Essential certification is included in this time, including core skills, CPR and Medication and Intravenous Therapy management.   Supernumerary  time with a designated preceptor and Nurse Educator is allocated following the initial orientation period. Over this time, the First Year Registered Nurse assumes increasing responsibly for the preceptor’s case load.

The First Year Registered Nurse continues to be supported by a preceptor and Nurse Educator NETP for the first year of practice.

PROGRAMME DURATION

The First Year of Nursing Practice programme will be completed over a maximum of 48 weeks. Newly registered nurses will be employed a minimum of 0.8 FTE. The programme will include 15 study days, and nursing practice experience to a total of 44 weeks, inclusive of supernumerary time and exclusive of annual leave entitlements.   On appointment you will be offered a one year employment contract.  On successful completion you will have the opportunity to apply for a permanent position within the organisation.

SELECTION CRITERIA

In order to be eligible for the programme the first year registered nurse will:

  • Have a nursing degree from a three year New Zealand nursing programme accredited by the Nursing Council of New Zealand 
  • Have registration with Nursing Council of New Zealand  within the Registered Nurse Scope of Practice
  • Be a New Zealand citizen or permanent resident
  • Have a current annual practicing certificate, with no restrictions

Have employment no less than 0.8 FTE with the organisation
Not have practised as a nurse for longer than six months before commencing on the programme

The Nurse Educators will facilitate the recruitment, selection and interview process. Applicants are asked to submit:

  • Curriculum vitae
  • Confirmation of NCNZ Registration and a copy of annual practicing certificate (Nursing Interns will supply this following confirmation of state final results)  
  • Third year academic transcript of theory and practice grades
  • Feedback from preceptors and clinical lecturers on Pre Registration clinical practice experience
  • A summary (of not more than 300 words) of the reasons for wishing to engage in the First Year of Practice Nursing Programme : Acute & Specialty settings.

The number of placements is dependant on actual staff vacancies at the date of programme commencement. Preference for a specific clinical practice setting should be included in the application process.

CERTIFICATION
At the completion of the programme, the first year registered nurse will be awarded a Certificate of Attainment. The following criteria must be met:

  • Attain specific competencies as identified in CPDP
  • Participate in satisfactory nursing performance development at 12 and 40 weeks  
  • Attend, contribute and reflect on study days, completing Nursing Council requirements as indicated
  • Successful completion PDRP (Level 2) Competent Registered Nurse Portfolio.
