Education and Development
The nursing education and development focus at the clinical level is on ensuring individual nurse competency.

Some areas of competency covered are:
- IV certification
- Pain management
- Tissue viability
- Respiratory
- Cardiovascular and diabetes management
- Falls risk assessment and management
- Acute assessment skills
This competency is reached through effective preceptorship, standardisation of ward orientation, first year of practice programmes and defining specialty practice competencies through the clinical practice development programmes (CPDPs).
Reflective practice and critical thinking are being encouraged through case review, peer review, clinical supervision and quality improvement as a means of improving patient outcomes within acute and speciality services, as well as across the care continuum.
