Our Philosophy

Midwifery within MidCentral Health is primarily concerned with the promotion of the health of the women and infants who use the company's services during their pregnancy, birth and the puerperium. An essential focus of the midwife-woman relationship is the development of a partnership in which the midwife seeks to assist the woman in making and realising choices with regard to pregnancy, birth, and the puerperium.

Midwives seek to enhance and protect the normal process of childbirth whenever possible. Midwives also recognise that a number of women will require medical intervention during their pregnancy and birth experience; in these circumstances midwives continue to validate the woman's experience and work with medical colleagues to promote and safeguard the health of the woman and her infant.

In delivering care, midwives recognise and value the physical, psychological, social, spiritual and sexual determinants of health, and reflect this in their midwifery practice.

Midwifery is dynamic. It seeks to integrate knowledge from the arts and sciences; it values research, and practice that is evidence-based. Midwives collaborate with other health professionals as needed to provide the best possible level of care to their clients. Midwifery care delivery is based on a professional process that involves the use of purposeful, competent strategies and processes.

Midwifery at MidCentral DHB

Midwifery is led by a Midwifery Dirtector who works collaboratively with the Obstetric Clinical Director, Director of Nursing, Maori Advisor, General Manager and MidCentral DHB Midwifery Advisor.

Clinical Practice / Leadership / Education

Charge Midwives and the Women’s Health Service Manager support MCH midwives in their provision of optimal care. Hands on clinical support and education is provided through a full time Midwifery Educator whose focus is ensuring the competence/confidence of staff and the fulfilment of the Midwifery Council of New Zealand ongoing triennial re-certification programme.

In addition, there are also educational scholarships available through the Midwifery Advisor for midwives who have been employed with MidCentral DHB for more than 12 months.

Midwives work across the scope of midwifery practice with rotation through a midwifery led antenatal clinic; delivery suite; antenatal day unit; antenatal / postnatal ward and community midwifery relief.
