Information Systems Strategic Planning

MDHB is developing a comprehensive, integrated IT system that makes it possible to collect relevant information from various sources and report in such a way that it is timely, efficient, accurate and complete with respect to patient care, and MDHB funding allocations.

Information Systems Strategic Plan Vision

MidCentral District Health Board’s vision for IT is to provide access to quality information across the district in a timely manner to ensure effective and efficient health decision-making. The plan has a five year focus.

What does the ISSP mean for consumers/patients?

Information presently held physically being held electronically

For example, the patient record will reduce in physical size and increase in electronic size and the radiology film will be replaced with a digital image.

New information being held

For example, a primary care GP using a computer-based Cardio Vascular Disease decision support system will capture and hold new clinical information in a practice management system. Some of this information will be sent (via an electronic referral) to a secondary care setting where it will be stored and used by health care providers. Other information will forwarded to national collections systems for use by policy analysts.

More information being shared between health care providers.

Examples are:

A patient’s secondary care electronic health record can be made available to their GP by way of a Medical Applications Portal (eg Concerto).
A patient’s (electronic) care plan can be accessed by any authorised health care provider involved in providing care.
