The volunteers at Palmerston North Hospital provide a valuable service to the community and support to the health care team. Volunteers have been providing services for many years and give their time to the comfort of patients and support to staff at the hospital.
The services volunteers provide include: running the sales trolley of items patients can purchase; the maintenance and the upkeep of flowers; as well as sorting, replacing and updating magazines in wards and clinics.
However, this service does not just happen – it is expertly managed and coordinated by Mary Green of Ashhurst.
Mary has been a volunteer for 35 years and has been the coordinator of the volunteers for 19 years. Due to ongoing health issues Mary has reluctantly given notice of her retirement. In recognition of Mary’s outstanding services to the field of community support, in 2006 she received a Palmerston North Civic Award – for her services not only to Palmerston North Hospital, but to other organisations as well.
Staff and management of Palmerston North Hospital also recognise and thank Mary for her most valuable contribution, both as a volunteer and as a coordinator over the past years. Her dedication and tireless support has been very much appreciated by all members of the health care team.
In January the usual annual social function and get together of the volunteers was held. This was the opportunity for Mary to farewell her team, and MidCentral Health to thank her for her dedication and long service. She has agreed to continue to guide and support volunteers while a new coordinator is introduced to the job.
MidCentral is seeking a volunteer coordinator to replace Mary. Anyone interested in taking up this important role, finding out more about it, or is interested in becoming a volunteer can contact Anne Amoore, MidCentral DHB phone (06) 350 8820, or phone Mary on (06) 326 8513.
