Four of 10 applications have been successful in this year’s round of grants totalling $8941 from the Tararua-based Bates Estate Trust.
The successful applicants this year are: Ballance School $5468, for shade cloth including steel poles and installation; Tararua Health Group, Dannevirke Community Hospital $369, for a child car seat for ambulance use; Tararua School dental therapists, Dannevirke South School Dental Clinic $1383, for tooth brushes, toothpaste, dental floss, award certificates, and fridge magnets with dental messages; and Hearing Association Southern Hawke’s Bay Branch $1701, for a FrontRow to Go (a sound system for classrooms), for Dannevirke South School.
The trust originally began distributing funds in 1994, and over the past 10 years has distributed a total of $233,056 in grants.
The trust was originally established to support the psychopaedic unit at the former Dannevirke Hospital. After the unit was closed the then Manawatu-Wanganui Area Health Board amended the trust’s terms to encompass community-based services.
Due to the specific trust requirements the scope for applications is relatively limited.
From its early days when the trust gave out about
$150,000 in grants a year, the trust funds have gradually reduced until the fund now stands at $21,500.
Further applications will be sought around March next year.
