Brush In oral health programme launched in Palmerston North

20/02/2012 | Oral Health Programme Launched

A new oral health “Brush In” programme was launched at Palmerston North’s Te Aroha Noa Early Childhood Centre last week.

This programme has been supported by Public Health Services, Child and Adolescent Oral Health Service, and funded by Takaro Rotary.

The programme’s aim is to raise awareness about oral health among children/whanau and for children to learn about healthy teeth and gums through regular brushing after their lunch time break. Alinna Nagel from Te Aroha Noa Early Childhood Centre was central to establishing this programme.

Each child receives a named toothbrush with appropriate cover cap and each toothbrush is stored in a special container to prevent cross infection. The toothpaste is provided and toothbrushes are replaced on a regular basis. The programme is a simple low cost way to make a difference to the oral health of young people. It is envisaged, with support of family/whanau that early oral hygiene practices will be established at home and that this will be reflected in the reduction in the number of caries (tooth decay).

In addition, parents at the centre receive messages on the importance of providing low cost simple ideas such as “Snacking is important for young children.” Offer fruit or savoury food such as vegemite or peanut butter sandwiches, crackers and cheese as these are “tooth-friendly food.”

Several “Brush In” projects are running in the Horowhenua region and this is the first for Palmerston North.

Child and Adolescent Oral Health Clinical Educator Julie Jenkins says: “What we are doing is creating good habits now so we don’t have to change bad habits later.”

Takaro Rotary President Beven Rennie was impressed by the enthusiasm of the children for cleaning their teeth and he looked forward to the ongoing support of the Takaro community. Te Aroha Noa would also like to acknowledge the donation from Takaro Lions.
