| Dudding Lake Warning Lifted
Dudding Lake, near Marton is again safe to swim in.
MidCentral Health and Horizons Regional Council announced the toxin levels that closed the lake on 29 January had dropped, and they were lifting the health warning imposed.
Tests carried out by Horizons Regional Council in late January showed elevated concentrations of cyanobacterial toxins (caused by blue-green algae) at the lake, and a health warning was issued which has lasted for the past three weeks.
Visitors to the lake were advised not to use the water for recreational purposes until health warnings were removed.
Cyanobacteria produce toxins that are harmful to humans and animals if swallowed or through contact with skin, such as may occur when swimming, water skiing or kayaking.
Exposure to cyanobacteria may cause symptoms such as skin rashes, nausea, tummy upset and tingling and numbness around the mouth or finger tips.
