| MidCentral Health 3rd Tier Restructuring

The restructuring has resulted in the disestablishment of six Nurse Manager positions, as well as four Service Manager positions and five senior business management related roles. The outcome will see a net reduction of 4.5 FTE positions.
The new Service Manager roles will be filled by health professionals who have a sound understanding of clinical service delivery.
The structure creates two new key senior nursing positions – Nurse Director, Medical Services and Nurse Director, Surgical Services, whose primary focus will be supporting the Charge Nurses in the provision of professional leadership and maintaining high standards of clinical practice throughout MidCentral Health.
The Director of Nursing will continue to have overall professional responsibility for MidCentral Health’s nurses, as has always been the case. MidCentral Health has, in addition to the Director of Nursing and the two new Nursing Director roles, over 120 Senior Nurses such as Nurse Practitioners, Clinical Nurse Specialists, Charge Nurses, Nurse Educators and Specialty Clinical Nurses. They have significant clinical leadership responsibilities in terms of front-line service delivery. MidCentral Health’s professional nursing leadership and governance is also well embedded. This is a very different scenario from the situation in the 1990s when “generic” management was introduced.
The development of the new structure involved wide consultation with MidCentral Health staff. In any change process it must be accepted that some will agree and some will disagree with the final outcomes. It is important to note that implementing the service management structure was well supported by many senior clinical staff. We believe the structure provides a sound foundation for addressing MidCentral Health’s immediate challenges, and in preparation for the implementation of the Clinical Services Plan.
