MDHB makes four external appointments to committees

30/06/2011 | New Committee Members

MDHB board chairman Phil Sunderland has welcomed the return of former board member Stephen Paewai, and another three new external committee appointments to its committees.

Mr Sunderland said the four new members have an excellent mix of health experience, business and community organisation expertise, and enthusiasm which should stand them in good stead for the exciting three years ahead. “Each of the new members come from different backgrounds, but I and the other committee and board members look forward to tapping into their knowledge and expertise and using it to benefit the patients of the MDHB region.”

The appointments which take effect from 1 July for three years are the result of three previous committee members retiring, and one - Richard Orzecki - being appointed to the board after last year’s elections.

Mr Paewai was a board member from 2008-2010, and a member of the community and public health advisory committee from 2007-08. He has a broad knowledge of the DHB and health governance experience. He also has experience within the health sector at a management level, having been the CEO of a large Iwi/Maori provider for several years.

He is a member of the CentralPHO (Primary Health Organisation), and was previously chair of the Tararua PHO. He has also served on Manawhenua Hauora, including being its chair.

He is presently doing consulting work, and is director for Tararua REAP, Te Tahua Trust, and Te Ohu Tiaki o Rangitane te Ika a Maui Trust. He has been appointed to the hospital advisory committee replacing Mr Orzecki.

Two new people have been appointed to the community and public health advisory committee – Andrew Ivory of Wellington, and Neil Perry of Palmerston North. They replace Linda Gray and Charmaine Hamilton.

Mr Ivory’s background is in investment banking having worked 12 years in the sector. Last year he moved into a financial advisory role with GMD Group and now manages his own company A Ivory Limited, which provides consultancy services to small and medium enterprises. He is a director of GDM Group Limited, and Doyle & Associates, Wanganui; and a member of the Institute of Directors in New Zealand.

Mr Perry has general management experience in local council, small business and sport. In the early 1900s he worked for four years for the Hyndburn Borough Council in the UK, the latter part as area housing manager. Since then he held various sports development roles. In 2002 he immigrated to New Zealand, and was director of coaching for Manawatu Cricket Association for four years; then general manager of Uniclear Tanks Limited and Clearflow Contracting. Since 2009 he has led and managed his own consulting business Perry Management Group.

He has governance experience, serving as a board member on local sporting bodies, and the New Zealand Concrete Tank Manufacturers Association; and is a member of the National Advisory Group, Building & Construction ITO.

Kevin Miles, of Levin, a former secondary school teacher, and since 2004 full time carer for his sick wife is the new member of the disability support advisory committee, replacing Nicolas Steenhout. Mr Miles is a council member of Parkinson’s New Zealand, and chairman of the Kapiti/Horowhenua Parkinson’s Society.

He has considerable experience in community-based voluntary organisations and will fill one of two committee positions with “disability consumer and/or advocate” background.
