MidCentral Health is acknowledging White Ribbon Day (Friday 25 November), with a range of exciting activities planned for staff and the public.
White Ribbon Day began in 1991, on the second anniversary of the massacre of 14 women by a lone gunman at a Canadian university. Prior to the massacre, he forced the men present to leave. A handful of Canadian men subsequently initiated the first male-led campaign to end violence against women. The White Ribbon campaign has spread to every continent and in 1999 the United Nations General Assembly declared November 25 the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women.
MidCentral DHB has printed its own White Ribbon Day poster this year, fronted by CEO Murray Georgel, to show staff are against violence.
It will also be holding a ‘White Out’ Competition where staff decorate their ward/service reception area in white, and staff are encouraged to wear white and have their faces painted white.
On 24 November as part of Palmerston North’s White Ribbon Day MidCentral Health is entering teams in a lunchtime relay race around The Square. There are two relays –a social one, and a serious one. Four people are needed for a team to run one quadrant of The Square each.
On 25 November, staff will wear white ribbons and give them to patients and families, and put up the MidCentral Health White Ribbon Day posters.
Other activities on the day include: a staff, and public quiz about White Ribbon Day; muffins decorated with white icing ribbons, available in the two hospital cafes; and a staffed display in the main hospital foyer including a white banner to sign to show your support for ending family violence; white ribbons being given to the public; and a quiz for the public.
