MidCentral District Health Board hosted a successful workchoice day yesterday (17 May 2011) with 100 students from local schools taking part.
“It’s been an awesome day and we have learnt heaps” said Waiopehu College students, Paige Jacobs, Monique Rakena, and Majie Cruz, about the WorkChoice Day held at Palmerston North Hospital.
The girls, who expressed an interest in medicine and nursing, were being taught about simulation in nursing education by UCOL Nurse Educator, Susie Le Page.
Waiopehu College was one of six local schools taking part in WorkChoice Day. The others included: Awatapu College, Freyberg High School, Palmerston North Girls High School, Queen Elizabeth College, and St Peter’s College.
This was the sixth year MidCentral Health has been involved in the national event which showcases prospective careers, with the emphasis on interactive displays. Students who participated had specifically expressed an interest in health.
MidCentral DHB Human Resource Administrator, Lianna Te Oriki says: “It was great to see students taking this opportunity to meet and talk with the different health professionals, ask questions, interact and learn more about the various career options available to them in health.”
WorkChoice Day is currently the only opportunity available for local students to get to see, hear, and talk about possible careers in health with health professionals.
This year the careers featured included: Occupational Therapy, Dieticians, Nursing, Social Work, Radiation Therapists, Dental, Resident Medical Officers, Resuscitation, Pharmacy, Medical Radiation Technologists and Physiotherapy.
This year was the 18th annual Workchoice Day where more than 6000 students from 120 schools nationally looked at 200 companies and workplaces for potential employment opportunities.
