Improvements made in ED following death of premature baby in 2009

15/08/2011 | ED Improvements

MidCentral Health has made a number of improvements to the way it assesses and manages women who present to the Emergency Department in premature labour. This follows the death of a baby born prematurely in the Emergency Department in December 2009.

Dr Kenneth Clark Chief Medical Officer says: “The DHB is implementing the recommendations endorsed by the Coroner, along with continuing reviews of process and systems within the Emergency Department.

“A number of changes have been made following an internal enquiry, which include a more detailed process to ensure that an early assessment of the estimated date of delivery occurs, and improved neonatal resuscitation education and training for Emergency Department staff.”
