Between 80 and 100 secondary school students from six schools around the MidCentral District Health Board region will take part in WorkChoice Day at Palmerston North Hospital next Tuesday (17 May).
This is the sixth year MidCentral Health has been involved in the national event which showcases prospective careers, with the emphasis on interactive displays. Students who visit have specifically expressed an interest in health, and are drawn from local secondary schools.
MidCentral DHB Human Resource Administrator, Lianna Te Oriki says: “WorkChoice Day is an excellent opportunity for students to meet and talk with different health professionals, ask questions, interact and learn more about the various career options available to them in health. It is also a great way for MidCentral Health to show case the talented health professionals we have here in the Manawatu.”
WorkChoice Day is currently the only opportunity available for local students to get to see, hear, and talk about possible careers in health with health professionals. It will be held in the hospital’s education centre from 10am to 12.15pm.
The theme this year is “A Taste of Health”. Students will be put into small groups and will have 15 minutes to experience one career which they will be allocated to on the day. The remaining time will be open for students to wander through the remaining stands.
This year the careers featured include: Occupational Therapy, Dieticians, Nursing, Social Work, Radiation Therapists, Dental, Resident Medical Officers, Resuscitation, Pharmacy, and Medical Radiation Technologists.
Local schools taking part include: Awatapu, Freyberg, Palmerston North Girls High School, Queen Elizabeth College, St Peters, and Waiopehu.
This year is the 18th annual Workchoice Day when more than 6000 students from 120 schools nationally will look at 200 companies and workplaces for potential employment opportunities.
