More volunteer drivers are needed for the Palmerston North Hospital campus free on-site shuttle that picks up and returns clinic patients and visitors to their cars, from 9 am to 4 pm Monday to Friday.
With just 13 volunteers, rather than the 20 needed, it is a challenge to fill the roster, especially during school holidays and other times when volunteers want time off.
Volunteer driver, Jan Cook, said: “The satisfaction of helping people and doing something for nothing is very rewarding. In the 12 months I’ve been a volunteer I have met so many lovely and interesting people. As a past employee of MidCentral District Health Board (for 38 years), it has been nice to still feel part of the place by being a volunteer driver.
“Coming to the hospital can be a stressful time for patients and visitors so greeting my passengers with a smile, helping to answer their questions and calmly driving them to and from their vehicle is an important and appreciated service.”
Now in its third year of operation, the shuttle does about 40 km per day and transports between 30 to 50 people daily depending on the season.
In line with MidCentral District Health Board’s policy of reducing emissions, the shuttle is a battery and petrol-driven hybrid car. The white Toyota Prius is easily recognised by its ‘Free Carpark Shuttle’ signage and orange flashing roof-top light.
Anyone interested in becoming a volunteer driver, is asked to contact Commercial Support Services Secretary, Joanne Fraser, on (06) 350-8800.
