| Nursing Professor visit
Professor Glenn Gardner, Foundation Chair and Professor of Clinical Nursing at Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital Health Service District, and Queensland University of Technology will speak in Palmerston North next week.
Prof Gardner has been brought to the city on Monday and Tuesday by the Palmerston North Hospital Medical Trust, and is the first visiting nursing scholar to come to the city annually, funded by the trust.
The trust exists from patient donations, and provides funds through an application process to MidCentral Health clinical staff for education and development.
Prof Gardner has an extensive background in acute care research, nursing practice development and workforce reform. Her research and publication activity in the field of acute care nursing has influenced practice in areas such as wound care, infection control and pressure injury prevention.
Her ongoing clinical research focus is acute care covering investigations of treatments, interventions, trajectories of care and the patients’ experience of these events. She has skills, training and experience in a wide range of research methodologies. Her current clinical research focus is the management of co-morbid chronic illness for patients in the hospital environment.
Additionally, she has a national and international profile in research into the practice and emerging role of the Nurse Practitioner. She was lead investigator for the ACT Nurse Practitioner Trial and headed up the team that conducted the Australia and New Zealand Nurse Practitioner Standards project. The findings from this research have informed legislative changes for nurse practitioner service in local jurisdictions and the adoption of national standards for nurse practitioner practice across Australia.
The Chief Nurse, for the Ministry of Health Mark Jones, and the Directors of Nursing from Wairarapa, Hutt Valley and Capital Coast District Health Boards are attending on Tuesday, as well as academics and a representative from the Nursing Council.
