Public Health Unit shares home safety messages on Kia Ora FM 89.8

29/09/2009 | PHU home safety on Kia Ora FM

This morning MidCentral Health (MCH) Health Promotion Advisor Nigel Fitzpatrick joined local health experts in an informative health chat on radio Kia Ora FM 89.8. The one-hour health programme has become a fixture on host Rocky Hudson’s show, and airs from 9am to 10am on the last Monday of each month.

Nigel joined ACC Injury Consultant Darrin Alexander, Whakapai Hauora Tamariki Ora Nurse Denise Marlow, and MCH Public Health Unit Health Protection Officer Chris Bland for today’s programme which focussed on how to look after yourself and your family around the home.

“The beauty of this forum is that we can share practical advice in an informal way – almost like having a chat around the table,” Nigel says. “Input from each expert was invaluable.”

Each guest brought stories to illustrate the point that although we feel safe in our homes we can make them safer and prevent accidents by doing things like securing mats, using fire guards and running cold water into the bath before adding the hot water. Identifying risks when moving into a new home, and hazards around Do It Yourself projects were also covered.

More information on safety in the home is available from MCH Public Health Unit on (06) 350-9110.
