Nurse-Led Urology Clinics Start in Dannevirke on 8 December

02/12/2009 | Urology clinics in Dannevirke

A Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) nurse-led urology clinic will begin at Dannevirke Community Hospital on 8 December 2009.

Initially the clinic will be monthly with a focus on seeing repeat patients:
• Selected patients to discuss diagnostic results, (consultation will be undertaken with the specialist before hand)
• Performing bladder instillations
• Education, and teaching self catheterisation
• Assessment of Lower Urinary Tract Symptoms, LUTS (male), and
• Neurogenic clinic held by the CNS.

The clinic is the latest extension in a programme which started in 2008 when a CNS (Lead) position was established in the Urology services, based at Palmerston North Hospital.
Each of these clinics provides benefits to the patients, department and organisation which include reduced waiting time for the patients, delivered locally.

The CNS is an expert in urological nursing, and undertakes an element of medical work delegated by Urologists. The CNS also works across the organisation within this specialty and has a focus on improving and enhancing clinical nursing practice to improve outcomes for patients.

Overall the Clinical Nurse specialist (Lead) approach follows and contributes to improving the patient journey and stream lining processes while facilitating a self management approach to patients’ conditions.
