The providers of health care in the MidCentral district were honoured at the 2008 Health Awards on Friday evening. Dannevirke’s Barraud Street Medical centre took home top honours, winning the supreme award for Team of the Year.
The judges commented that Barraud Street Health Centre exemplified the meaning of a Primary Health Care Team.
“Barraud Street Health centre operates an integrated general practice, comprising general practitioner, practice nursing, palliative care, sexual health, chronic care management, cardiology and respiratory services in association with specialist medicine and nursing,” explains Mike Grant, general manager funding and chair of the judging panel.
“The Medical Centre, also invests in its future through successive planning of its workforce unlike any other in the district,” said Mr Grant. “Barraud Street is never content to sit on its laurels, as demonstrated its pathway into the future. It is definitely going to be exciting to watch them grow and develop in the future.”
The judges also acknowledged the centre’s commitment to quality, the centre being one of just two or three to have achieved Cornerstone Accreditation at its first assessment.
In the leadership category, Dr David Ayling’s continued contribution to the vision and direction of health care was recognised with Dr Ayling awarded the leadership award.
The judges were taken by the wide support for Dr Ayling expressed in the application.
“Dave is well known and well regarded as a clinician and is also recognised for his contribution to Primary Health Care,” explained Mr Grant.
“His reputation at Youth One Stop Shop is outstanding and in spite of the growing demands on his time, he continues to find time to support the Albert Street Medical Centre and continue working with the prison.”
Dr Ayling, who was unaware that he had even been nominated, was an original contributor to the MidCentral District’s Primary Health Care Strategy and Mr Grant believes his leadership continues to be vital to the strategy’s continued success.
This year’s health awards attracted over 80 entries from health providers throughout the district. 600 guests attended the awards ceremony including finalists, board members and community leaders.
