More than $18,000 has been earmarked for distribution to eight successful Bates Estate applications. A total of 11 organisations applied for the 2008 grants from the latest round of the Tararua-based trust.
The trust was originally set up to support the children’s facilities at the former Dannevirke Hospital, but when the unit was closed the trust’s terms were changed to encompass Tararua community-based services.
In the past 10 years the trust has distributed close to $250,000. This year’s 11 applications sought funds totalling $44,048.76 – from a remaining trust pool of $34,035.55.
The biggest grant this year of $4860 went to Akitio School in Pongaroa to buy a shade sail. Eketahuna School and Totara College of Accelerated Learning in Dannevirke, who have previously received Bates funding for large permanent sunshades, applied for further funds for sunshades. Each received half this year’s application ($2032).
Other successful applications and amounts were: The Hearing Association Southern Hawkes’ Bay Branch Inc to buy a Front Row to Go FM system to be used by the First Years Pre School Inc ($1629); Tararua School Dental Therapists for toothbrushes, toothpaste, dental floss, certificates, magnets and balloons ($2347); Woodville School to buy Kidz Aerobix for Jump Jam licence fee and DVDs ($399); and Pahiatua Community Services, Primary Health Care Team for headlice shampoo ($604).
