Age Concern Manawatu is inviting older people living at or near Kopeka Court, in Palmerston North to a Community House Party to be held next Tuesday (31 July) from 10am till noon.
The party is a joint venture between Public Health Service, Palmerston North Neighbourhood Support, Community Police, Palmerston North City Council, and Age Concern Manawatu.
Sue Gould, of Age Concern says coming together for morning tea will provide our elderly citizens an opportunity to meet their neighbours, and hopefully find similar interests and hobbies.
On the agenda will also be brief talks by police, Neighbourhood Support, and health professional representatives.
MidCentral Health mental health promoter Pauline Brown believes some older people living alone have less opportunity to meet new people, especially if driving has become difficult.
She says: “Elderly people can feel quite isolated. Research has shown that having community support, and regular contact with friends brings better health. We hope this event will improve people’s mental and physical health by providing them with an opportunity to meet others.”
The organisers have walked the talk in adopting the party’s key message that ‘co-operation makes us all stronger’.
Neighbourhood Support carried out a letter drop to residents around Kopeka Court, which is off Edwards Place, the City Council provided the venue - Kopeka Court Community Centre, Public Health has helped with the food, and Age Concern Manawatu has promoted the event and is developing plans to deliver similar events in other locations throughout the city over the next four months.
