Don't let the flu get you!

15/02/2010 | Immunisation Programme 2010

The seasonal flu vaccine will be available from 8 March from general practices. This will protect you against swine flu and two other flu strains.

Members of the public with concerns should in the first instance call: Healthline 0800 611 116

The Ministry of Health is offering an early influenza to eligible “at-risk” people, and frontline heath workers from 1 February. The “at-risk” people are:
People under 65 years of age (including children) with underlying health conditions, such as chronic respiratory disease, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, renal disease, obesity, and cancer.

Pregnant women are also eligible for an early influenza vaccine anytime during pregnancy.

The early vaccine for the above groups, will protect only against swine flu, and requires two vaccinations three weeks apart. Those who have this vaccine are recommended to also have the seasonal flu vaccination when it becomes available in March.

For the week beginning 8 February, community-based clinics will be available for the eligible “at risk” public in the MidCentral District Health Board district.  If you are unsure if you are eligible then please check with your health practitioner.
