In keeping with the philosophy of “treatment closer to home”, MidCentral DHB is providing dialysis review clinics in Whanganui in partnership with Whanganui DHB for some Whanganui home-based patients so they do not have to travel to Palmerston North.
The first clinic took place on 22 November and there will be further clinics every two months conducted by a renal specialist and clinical nurse specialists for peritoneal dialysis and home haemodialysis.
MidCentral DHB Nephrologist Dr Norman Panlilio said: “The introduction of these clinics is in response to patient’s feedback. We have held consumer forums in Whanganui and the feedback is helping us to improve our services. Renal patients dialysing at home need regular review and we want to make this as easy as possible for them. The Whanganui-based clinics reduce travel time and also make it easier for other family members to attend.”
Currently 22 Whanganui residents are on home dialysis, supported by MidCentral DHB’s renal service. MidCentral DHB has a project underway for a “home first” approach to renal dialysis. This will see the majority of people who require renal dialysis dialysing at home. Home dialysis is more comfortable, more convenient and has proven long term health benefits and improved quality of life.
