It is designed to help navigate between locations in the main hospital building – for example, it will map a route between cardiology and the Top Café. It has obvious benefits for patients and visitors, who are not familiar with the hospital’s layout.
The app works through Bluetooth beacons and does not use phone data so there is no interference with medical equipment. It is a silent app requiring people to look at the screen for directions. There are 26 destinations in this first release phase and they include most places that patients and visitors use.
Eventually, the app will extend to the whole hospital campus.
An important feature is the ability for patients to add their appointments. The app will remind them when their appointment is close and will help them plan their travel to the hospital, including which gate to enter, where to park and where to go for the appointment.
