Start to be made on $2 million ED refurbishment project at Palmerston North Hospital
A start will be made this week on a phased refurbishment of Palmerston North Hospital’s Emergency Department (ED) reception and waiting room area.
The $2 million, six-month project is expected to make the area more welcoming, and improve the patient experience.
On Thursday, the first hoardings around the worksite will be erected and work inside the hospital’s main entrance will get underway establishing new office space for the orderlies so they can move out of the area adjacent to ED. This area will then be developed for ED medical staff, freeing up space within ED to enable the planned improvements to be made.
The internal access between the Hospital’s Main Entrance and the Emergency Department will be blocked off while this section of work is done. Patients arriving at ED will still be able to use the same ED entrance as at present.
Every effort is being made to minimise the disruption to the public.
Eventually the refurbishment will provide: triage rooms for waiting room and ambulance patients to be assessed in private; changes to the layout of assessment areas to improve the flow of patients through the department; a more welcoming, warm reception area; and improved facilities for relatives of critically ill patients in ED.
