If you have a child under the age of five, you are entitled to free health checks from a Well Child Tamariki Ora (WCTO) provider, and MidCentral DHB wants to make sure everyone is using them.

From the moment your child is born, it is important to enrol them with a WCTO provider and a general practice (GP) team; your lead maternity carer (LMC) will help you transition from their care to the provider. Before the age of five, your child will receive seven core checks from the WCTO provider, plus a B4 school check at age four.
These checks make sure the child is healthy, developing well, and all up-to-date with immunisations. For parents, it provides some peace of mind that their child is developing well, and if any health issues are identified, the Well Child team can link families to services that can help.
Rachel Utikere, clinical team leader at WCTO provider Te Wakahuia, is emphasising the importance of getting these checks done.
She said: “These checks are a great way of making sure your child is healthy, and I want to encourage parents to use all the checks they are entitled to. Over the years I’ve done these checks, I’ve always found that they are a great opportunity to both reassure parents about their child’s development, and identify any health issues.
“We want to make sure it’s as easy as possible for parents to attend, so each check has a timeframe for it to be carried out. For example, our core four well child check is done between five and seven months of age, meaning there is two month period for an appointment.
Importantly, if you have moved to MidCentral from outside the district, you need to enrol with a new provider to ensure you continue receiving the checks.”
The final step of the WCTO schedule is the B4 school check. This is done separately and it is recommended that it is carried out as soon as a child turns four, and must be done before they turn five. These can be booked by calling 0800 692 445.
