Our Service

At the Regional Cancer Treatment Service, we pride ourselves in providing the very best in cancer care.  Our team of highly qualified staff are here to assist you in your cancer therapy journey and to make it as easy and comfortable for you as possible.

Facility
RCTS Radiation Oncology has a dedicated CT scanner within the department and access to diagnostic MRI and PET scanning services to assist with treatment planning.  Our centre operates four Linear Accelerators (treatment machines), a superficial treatment machine and an extensive image-guidance system.  We run a well-established electronic medical records system and an extensive quality assurance program.

RCTS Radiation Oncology is a mixed-vender department with Siemens and Elekta.

Technology and Experience
Radiation therapy is continually improving due to research and advancements in technology.

RCTS Radiation Oncology is at the forefront of cancer treatment techniques and developments.  The centre led the way with the introduction of Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy Treatment (IMRT) into New Zealand in 2003, and was the first centre in Australasia to be accredited by the MD Anderson (Texas, USA)  accreditation programme for the delivery of IMRT for head and neck cancer. With a well-established IMRT program and a team highly experienced in the planning and delivery of IMRT, this complex treatment technique is now standard practice for a range of cancer sites.

The centre continues to move forwards with a strong focus on providing optimal evidence-based care and strives for excellence and efficiency in cancer treatment. The Centre is involved with Australasian and International trials, has strong communication lines with national and international centres, and is regularly represented at many of the major International Oncology conferences.

Training and Development
RCTS Radiation Oncology is an International Training centre offering courses in VSIM/IMRT/IGRT
RCTS Radiation Oncology is a clinical placement centre for students at the University of Otago for both Medicine and Radiation Therapy.  Medical physics registrars from the University of Canterbury also have clinical placements within the department.
