We are exposed to radiation all the time. Some of it is natural, and some of it is from technology such as radio signals. Not all radiation is harmful.
Ionising radiation, such as X-rays and gamma is what is usually referred to as radioactive. Non-ionising radiation includes extremely low frequency electromagnetic fields, such as lasers, microwaves, cell-phone transmissions, radiofrequency fields, ultra violet and infrared.
Sunbeds expose users to higher levels of dangerous UV radiation than the sun and increase the risk of melanoma and other skin cancers.
Public Health offers:
• Sunbed inspection and auditing of client safety
• Responding to inquiries and complaints
• Reviewing resource consent applications relating to ionising and non-ionising radiation
• Response to radiation emergencies
