Burials and cremation must occur in a dignified, controlled and hygienic way which, as far as possible, demonstrates respect for the wishes, as well as the cultural beliefs, of the deceased and next of kin.
Public Health works with local authorities, burial ground owners and funeral directors to carry out its functions under the burial and cremation legislation.
Public Health offers:
• Process licences for disinterment’s and supervise the procedure to ensure due regard for dignity and public health
• Process applications for the closure of cemeteries and for burial in special places (i.e. not in cemeteries)
• Advise on the movement of bodies between countries
• Involvement in the approval process for new crematoria
