Public Health supports Pacific communities to improve their health and wellbeing. In New Zealand, there are more than 40 Pacific ethnic groups, each with its own culture, language, and history. Pacific people often experience poorer health, and may be more exposed to risk factors than other New Zealanders. Public Health works with communities to identify needs and to find solutions together, so that they are more effective for Pacific peoples.
Public Health offers:
• Support for organisations, community groups, preschools and workplaces to develop healthy lifestyle practices
• Encourage children’s health and wellbeing by promoting maternal nutrition, infant nutrition and breastfeeding
• Support for preschools in the delivery of their healthn programmes e.g. healthy lunches, tooth brushing, physical activity (eg swimming) etc
• Training and resources for teachers, health workers and other professionals
• Support for events and initiatives that encourage healthy choices for Pacific people
