Toiora Māori (Māori health promotion) is the process of enabling Māori to increase control over the determinants of health and strengthen their identity as Māori, and thereby improve their health and position in society (Ratima 2001).

Access to the Māori world is important in order to achieve a secure Māori identity, which has in turn been associated with good health.

Māori make up 20.2% of the population of the MidCentral District Health Board area

Public Health works in Māori settings such as Marae, Kura and Kōhanga Reo.

Public Health aims to improve the overall health status of Māori populations to improve Māori health outcomes.

Māori approaches to health promotion are based upon well-known models such as Te Whare Tapa Whā, Te Pae Mahutonga, Te Wheke, and Kia Uruuru Mai a Hauora.

Public Health offers:
• help to implement and adopt kaupapa Māori based strategies towards developing healthy lifestyles
• support for capacity and capability building for groups and organisations to create healthy environment strategies towards well-being
• support for hapū and marae to identify needs and encourage supportive healthy environments
