MidCentral DHB’s Ward 25 Older People's Acute Assessment and Liaison Unit.
The OPAL Unit is a dedicated 29 bedded (18 acute care and 4 delirium) for older people with frailty plus six side rooms and a terminal care (family) room to be used flexibly between the Healthy Ageing and the Acute and Electives clusters. Admission and exclusion criteria includes:
 

Age 75 or over (65 and over for Maori & Pasifika) with frailty and

  • an acute medical illness (e.g. infection) and/or
  • geriatric syndromes such as immobility, multi-morbidity, incontinence, dementia, polypharmacy, psychosocial problems, delirium and falls.
