PHOs are funded on the basis of the number of people enrolled on their register. People join the PHO by enrolling with a general practice.
Primary Health Organisation Responsibilities
PHOs are responsible for coordinating local primary health care services with the objectives of improving the community’s health and reducing health inequalities. They have particular responsibility for overseeing first contact health services provided by general practice, which are to be provided on a 24 hour a day, seven day a week basis. They are also responsible for a range of other specialized services such as diabetes specialist nursing, chronic care teams, local health promotion and Services to Improve Access.
PHOs are responsible for the coordination and delivery of 24 hour accident and medical services. They are also responsible for the investigation, assessment, treatment, monitoring and recovery of health problems, including the care of chronic or recurring conditions.
