Inpatient/Community Maternity

MidCentral Health has antenatal and postnatal inpatient, and community maternity services.

Antenatal Inpatient

Antenatal (pregnant) women who have complications in their pregnancy may need to stay in the hospital overnight or for several days or weeks. The maternity ward is located on floor 2 of the Women’s Health Unit and caters for both antenatal and postnatal women.

Antenatal women will have their own room or share with another antenatal client.

You will be cared for by the hospital midwives who work on the ward. Some reasons for admission to the ward in pregnancy may be:

Postnatal Inpatient

You may choose to go home directly from delivery suite if all is normal a few hours after birth.  If you choose to stay in hospital for one or two nights you will be transferred to the postnatal/maternity ward approximately two hours after birth.

The postnatal/maternity ward is a 24 bed ward with a mixture of single and double rooms.  All rooms have ensuites. Some ensuites are shared with adjoining rooms.  Priority for single rooms goes to antenatal (pregnant) patients who are in hospital for close monitoring due to high risk pregnancies.  Also, women who have a caesarean section will have a single room.

Visiting hours for partners is 8.00am – 8.30pm
All other visitors strictly 2.00pm – 7.30pm

There are no facilities for partners to stay overnight.
Average length of postnatal stay is one-two days after a vaginal birth and two-four days after a caesarean section, for well woman and babies.

Hip checks for babies are carried out by the orthopaedic team on Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 8am. These are done wherever you and baby may be within the Women’s Health Unit (delivery Suite, postnatal ward or the neonatal unit).  This service is also available as an outpatient and is done in the Antenatal Day Unit on the first floor outside delivery Suite.
