General Surgery

In the MidCentral District Health Board acute and non-urgent general (elective) surgery is performed at Palmerston North Hospital.

General Surgical Procedures Performed

Common procedures and treatments include those for:

  • gastrointestinal disorders
  • liver and biliary disorders
  • hernias
  • vascular disorders
  • endocrine disorders
  • skin disorders

Acute patients

When you have a medical problem that requires urgent attention you are classified as acute. You will be seen immediately to determine whether you need to be admitted to hospital and/or have surgery.

Non-urgent patients (Elective Surgery)

When you have a medical problem that may require surgery your GP will request an appointment through the outpatient clinic with the appropriate specialist at Palmerston North Hospital. Waiting times are dependent on the urgency of your case and you will be advised of these both for your first specialist assessment and if required, surgery.
