If you are newly diagnosed with cancer you are likely to be experiencing a range of emotions. You may also have many questions about various aspects of your treatment and concerns about the future.

The Oncology Team is available to assist with issues arising from your condition. We provide a confidential, professional service which can help in any area where you are experiencing difficulty.
We provide physical assistance, emotional support and practical help. We can see you at home, in hospital or in our offices.


Oncology Resource Nurse

Provides information about cancer, explanations about tests and treatment (eg surgery, radiation therapy, chemotherapy as well as other health issues. Monitors progress of patients and manages symptoms before, during and after treatment. This includes being able to access test results and other information relating to your treatment and condition. Acts a liaison between patients and doctors and consultants. Refers to other members of the community health teams as necessary.

Oncology Social Worker

Provides information regarding travel, accommodation and other financial assistance available as well as assistance with WINZ benefit issues. Also can provide counselling and coping strategies for dealing with emotional issues such as uncertainty and grief. Crisis support for patients and families and caregivers coping with recent diagnoses or other highly stressful events. The Social Worker also liaises with the Cancer Society and other community groups.

Other Good Health Wanganui Community Services

Assistance and advice is available from other GHW health professionals who may visit you at home if required.

These services include:
Occupational therapists, physiotherapists, ostomy nurse, dietitiian, respiratory nurse, district health nurses, senior assessmet team for over 65’s, cultural support.
Other groups and organisations we liaise with:
health professionals, other GHW staff, other hospitals, hospice, community organisations, Government departments.
