Radiation Oncology
The Radiation Oncology department in Palmerston North is part of the Regional Cancer Treatment Service (RCTS). Our centre provides radiation therapy care to people in the Manawatu, Taranaki, Hawkes Bay, Wanganui, Gisborne, Horowhenua and Wairarapa.
As a specialist centre, our aim is to provide optimal evidence-based care and to continually strive for excellence and efficiency in cancer treatment. Our well-qualified team is committed to treating you as an individual, with a high level of professional care and attention. We treat approximately 120 patients per day.
RCTS Radiation Oncology is one of New Zealand’s leading cancer centres, having been awarded “Centre of Excellence” status in 2008 from our principal linear accelerator vendor.
We were the first Radiation Oncology treatment centre in Australasia to be accredited by the MD Anderson accreditation programme (Texas, USA) for the delivery of Intensity Modulated treatment of head and neck cancer. This is a complex treatment technique that allows sparing of healthy tissues whilst delivering an optimal radiation dose to the tumour. This centre was the first centre in New Zealand, and first equal with Peter Mac of Melbourne, to routinely provide such treatment in Australasia.
