A key objective of the Ministry of Health’s National Immunisation Programme is improving health by reducing vaccine-preventable diseases such as hepatitis B, measles and influenza. In 2008 immunisation against
Human Papillomavirus (HPV) was added to the national schedule
Immunisation Services
MidCentral Health’s Public Health Service works towards the Ministry of Health’s goal of controlling or eliminating vaccine-preventable disease.
Services provided include:
- Provision of school-based immunisation programmes
- Investigation of vaccine-preventable disease
- Immunisation advice and promotion to increase uptake of national immunisation schedule vaccines Immunisation - Immunisation Schedule
- Authorisation of Independent Vaccinators
- Providing Tuberculosis Vaccines (BCG) to infants or persons meeting the criteria for this vaccine. (See MoH Immunisation Handbook 2006) Immunisation Handbook 2006
- Ensuring all babies born to mothers who are carriers of hepatitis B receive appropriate treatment
- Planning for mass vaccination campaigns in the event of a pandemic

National Immunisation Register
What is the National Immunisation Register?
The National Immunisation Register (NIR) is a computerised information system that has been developed to hold immunisation details of New Zealand children. This will assist in improving immunisation rates which will offer individual protection against vaccine-preventable diseases and protection for the community against recurring epidemics.
What does the Immunisation Services Do?
- Provides an accurate record of an individual’s immunisation history. The NIR holds complete immunisation records for children born in the MidCentral region after 3 October 2005. Nationally, complete information is held for all children born from 2006 onwards.
- Assists health providers with recalls and follow up.
- Reports on the immunisation coverage of populations to allow resource allocation to areas where gaps are identified.
