Public Health: Emergency Management & Response
In preparation for civil defence or other emergencies MidCentral Health’s Public Health Service develops plans and procedures to reduce the impact on public health. These plans are developed for both MidCentral's region (Palmerston North, Manawatu, Horowhenua and Tararua) and the Good Health Wanganui region.
Public Health Emergencies can happen without warning. It is important plans are made to prepare for response and recovery to minimise the risk to health while ensuring the continuation of health services.
Essential services like water and power may also be disrupted which would add to the health risks.
In conjunction with other agencies the public health service has plans prepared to respond to
- Communicable disease outbreaks (e.g. pandemic influenza)
- Flooding
- Earthquakes
- Hazardous Substance incidents (e.g. chemical spills)
- Tsunami
- Other natural disasters
