MidCentral Health's pharmacy department provides medicines to patients of MidCentral Health. MidCentral Health's pharmacy department is seperate to Hospital Health Pharmacy at the front entrance of Palmerston North Hospital.

Where is the Pharmacy Department?

The pharmacy department is on the services side of Palmerston North Hospital in the kitchen block.

It is on the ground floor down the link corridor to Hospital Stores and past the corridor entrance to Central MRI. Double doors to your right at the base of the stairs instead of going outside to car park reserved for night staff. Please press the call bell on your arrival.


What happens in the Pharmacy Department?

The Pharmacy Department provides a range of services including:

  • Inpatient Dispensing when needed for hospitalised patients, and Hospital in the Home patients,
  • Outpatient Dispensing (06 350 8270) just for the very few medicines which are only subsidised if obtained through a hospital pharmacy. (For community funded medicines, prescriptions may be dispensed from your local pharmacy or Hospital Health Pharmacy which is a community pharmacy in the main foyer of the hospital.
  • Drug Information to our patients and health professionals
  • Clinical Pharmacy services including assistance with managing medicines therapy including: selection, dosing, monitoring, notification of suspected adverse reactions, and maximising therapeutic outcomes,
  • A pharmaceutical reference library for other health professionals,
  • Sterile Production and pharmaceutical compounding services for the hospital including preparation of total parenteral nutrition (TPN) Ext 7916,
  • Cytotoxic Drug dose preparation for the Regional Cancer Treatment Service Ext 8136,
  • Professional Advisor Pharmacy / Chief Pharmacist (06) 350 8276),
  • Medicine Trials support,
  • Individual medications review for patients referred by consultants,
  • In-service training and education on medicines and their selection, dosage, storage, handling, and compounding,
  • Emergency and after hours supply of Pharmaceutical for wards and departments,
  • Advisory service for operation of the Pharmaceuticals Warehouse (Link to MM).
  • Therapeutic Drug Monitoring
  • Assistance with the development and maintenance of clinical guidelines and the Formulary of Preferred Medicines with Prescribing Notes
  • Representation on Medicines Advice and Policy Committee and Infection Control Committee.

Hours

  • 8am - 5pm Mon to Friday for Outpatient Dispensing and compounding services,
  • 8am - 5pm Mon to Fri for Inpatient Dispensing and compounding services,
  • 9am - Noon on Sat, Sun, & public holidays for inpatient services only,
  • After hours and On Call 24 hours per day and 7 days per week. Contact on-call pharmacist through the switchboard.
