Child, Adolescent and Family Mental Health Services
Child, Adolescent and Family is an interdisciplinary service with clinical social workers, clinical psychologists, psychiatric nurses, a paediatrician, occupational therapists and a psychiatrist who provide specialist care for children, youth and their families.
The service is part of the MidCentral Health Mental Health service and is free of charge.
Services Provided
Child, Adolescent and Family provide mental health, and alcohol and other drug assessments to our client base aged from zero up to nineteen years of age. Assessments are scheduled after a referral has been received. Referrals are accepted from a wide range of agencies. Clients can be seen in emergency situations during working hours if there are significant risk factors present. A general mental health service is available for contact outside of office hours to ensure that clients have support 24 hours a day.
Following assessments, Child, Adolescent and Family negotiate with families what therapy and other supports may look like.
Child, Adolescent and Family are a family based service who provide family therapy as well as offering individual therapy.
Clinical Psychologists can provide psychological assessments in consultation with families and key workers.
Child, Adolescent and Family are located in the community village at Palmerston North Hospital; at the Horowhenua Health Centre and also provide outpatient services in Feilding, Pahiatua and Dannevirke.
Child, Adolescent and Family are able to access support services to enhance and encourage the recovery of our clients. This includes Te Matai House, a respite house on the outskirts of Palmerston North which provides a safe and supportive environment for our young people. Richmond New Zealand provides the opportunity for children and youth to experience group work and on some occasions, some specific individual work. We are also able to utilise the support of Te Rangatahi Unit, which is based in Porirua. Te Rangathai Unit is an inpatient unit for our acute clients.
