Acute Mental Health Emergency

If you have an acute mental health emergency please phone 0800 653 357. Assistance is free and is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

The Mental Health Emergency Team

The mental health emergency team is a specialist team of community psychiatric nurses and consultant psychiatrists.

This is a free service and is offered 24 hours a day, seven days a week.  During business hours, each community mental health team offers a mental health emergency service in their area.  Existing consumers/tangata whaiora are encouraged to contact their key-worker in the first instance.

Crisis Respite

Crisis respite is a short term intervention (usually one to two nights) for consumers/tangata whaiora who require constant observation and support, but who do not require admission to hospital.

A trained caregiver stays with the consumer/tangata whaiora who is receiving crisis respite care. The comfort and safety of consumer/tangata whaiora and caregivers is important and is considered when arranging crisis respite. Crisis respite may be provided within the hospital or at another place appropriate to the consumer's needs.
