MidCentral Health’s diabetes service operates from the Diabetes Lifestyle Centre at Palmerston North Hospital. The focus of the Diabetes Lifestyle Centre is to provide specialist care with a multidisciplinary approach to people with diabetes who most require it. That is:
- People with type 1 diabetes
- Children and youth
- Diabetes in pregnancy
The Diabetes Lifestyle Centre
MidCentral Health's Diabetes Lifestyle Centre, based at Palmerston North Hospital will provide you with specialist medical, nursing and dietetic assessment, treatment and care. This is to ensure the best management of your diabetes and promote self-management where possible.
National Diabetes Nursing Knowledge and Skills Framework
A foundation MidCentral District Health Board National Diabetes Nursing Knowledge and Skills Framework is available. The framework sets guidelines for minimum preparation for a nurse providing care to a person with diabetes.

Specialist Clinical Care
Specialist clinical care is available if you are newly diagnosed with type 1 diabetes or have poorly controlled diabetes. You may be seen in your home, at the Diabetes Lifestyle Centre, in hospital as an inpatient, or in a clinic.
Episodic Diabetes Follow-up
If you have diabetes with significant complications and other co-existing illnesses, episodic diabetes follow-up service provides you with intensive follow-up care. After you are stabilised your care will be returned to the primary health care provider.
Diabetes Complication Assessment and Treatment
This service allows for the early detection or prevention of any diabetes-related complications and allows for your more effective treatment and reduction in morbidity.
Diabetes in Pregnancy Care
If you are planning a pregnancy and have pre-existing diabetes, pre-pregnancy counselling and intensive stabilisation is available. This intensive treatment will continue (working with the Obstetrician in the High Risk Antenatal Clinic) both throughout and post your pregnancy.
Gestational diabetes complicates 4 per cent of otherwise normal pregnancies and its management involves specialist diabetes nursing, medical and dietetic care, monitoring and education.
Children and Youth with Diabetes
Specialised clinical and educational programmes have been designed to meet the different psychosocial, educational and medical needs of children and youth with diabetes including:
- Pump therapy
- Intensive insulin therapy
